Natsume Yuujinchou episode 3

Another great episode for Natsume Yuujinchou! This was probably my favourite episode so far, it balanced both comedy and seriousness very well. The story was very interesting, it had two spirits who came to see Natsume, but instead of an usual request for their names back, they wanted him to get rid of a human who was an exorcist who was destroying many spirits whether they were good or bad. At first, he refused the offer, but they ended up following him everywhere he went, which was actually pretty funny, though obviously very annoying for him. When he finally realized the situation that the spirits were in he decided to help them, but he also had different intentions because he believed that the person who was killing the spirits was someone new in his school, which would mean he must be able to see spirits as well. This was an important part to the episode because we come to understand that Natsume has always felt lonely because everyone around him always thought of him as weird. It also didn’t help that when he was a child his parents would always mention how they wouldn’t want him because he would always say strange things and when he met someone who he began to believe had the same ability to see spirits as him, they ended up being a spirit themselves. The conclusion to all the events was very interesting and definitely unexpected.

In the episode we also got to see how Natsume is like at his school. The outcome ended up being that he has barely any impact at all and his own classmates didn’t even realize they were in the same class. Though, I would assume that for the most part, he wanted it that way because he believes that nobody would really accept him anyway. At least, from what I understood, the people in his class weren’t mean to him or anything, which is at least one positive thing. I also believe that it is possible that this series won’t only be about Natsume give spirits their names back. At the beginning of the episode, he mentions about how exhausted he has become through the process of giving everyone’s names back, which would mean that he isn’t really enjoying himself. Also, Nyanko keeps on mentioning how thin the book has become and if he’s already complaining about it by episode 3, then something has to change within the next episodes. Nyanko also taught Natsume that he has complete control over the spirit if he just uses the name, so hopefully he takes that into consideration in the next episodes and perhaps uses the power that he actually has. This series is definitely one of my favourites of the season, so I can’t wait to see how everything will turn out.

  1. I think Natsume appreciates the glimpses of his grandmother he sees when he returns the names. I also think that his growth during the series will be learning to balance his interactions with both spirits and regular humans. For all we know, his friendship with the spirit girl may have been the only real friendship he’s had so far.

You’re blogging my 3 favorite summer series (this, Haruka, and Hidamari), but I think NY is the best of the three.

  2. @MisterEd: Good point, he has mentioned before how he enjoys learning about the stories the spirits have to say. It’s kind of sad to think that the spirit may have been his only friend, the spirit was so nice! 😥
Thanks. The three I’m blogging may be my favourites of the season as well, though I’m not sure which one I prefer out of them yet.

  3. This is my favourite of the season!
